Grand gingerbread creations will decorate the Greenport Fire Department on Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7 as part of The Paul Drum Life Experience Project's (PDLEP) first annual Gingerbread Contest.

Those whose visions of extravagant sweet confections can seamlessly be brought to life are invited to enter the competition, which is open to both professionals and amateurs. PDLEP advises that entries may be inspired by a building, historic structure, seaworthy vessel, barn, farm stand, lighthouse, or other exquisite locale. Contests may work on their own, or form a team of culinary experts. At stake are blue ribbons and bragging rights, of course.

"We're looking forward to some beautiful and creative structures," said Arlene Klein, co-founder of the PDLEP, "I have no doubt that our community won't disappoint!"

There will be a special viewing at the Greenport Fire Department Community Room on Friday, December 6 from 6 to 8 p.m., as well as Saturday, December 7 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The whimsical masterpieces will be auctioned off during a silent auction in support of PDLEP's complimentary educational children's programming.

Those interested in showing off their magnificent design must register by Saturday, November 30. If selected, participants must deliver and install their entry on Friday, December 6 between 12 and 3 p.m. The maximum size of entries' bases cannot be larger than 24" x 24". The gingerbread house's structure must primarily be made with gingerbread and the entirety of the masterpiece must be constructed with edible products.

The first annual Gingerbread Contest will feature three categories: Professional, Amateur, and Just for the fun of it. A panel of volunteer judges, which will consist of a professional architect, culinary person, and artist, will evaluate works on overall appearance, originality and creativity, and precision.

Top honors will be awarded on Saturday, December 7 at 1 p.m., while the silent auctions will conclude on Saturday, December 7 at 4 p.m.

The Paul Drum Life Experience Project, a 501(c)3 charitable organization, is "dedicated to enriching the lives of children through the exploration of ideas, discussions and hands-on experiences."

The Greenport Fire Department Community Room is located at 311 3rd Street in Greenport. For more information, visit auldrumlifeexperienceproject.org.
