Annual Benefit North Fork 5K Expected To Draw Hundreds

The 14th Annual John May Mile and 5K Race, the East End's Premier Older Americans Month Celebration, returns to Brecknock Hall Greenport on Saturday, May 11.

The benefit 5K, held in support of the Greenport Fire Department (GFD), is open to runners and walkers of all ages and abilities, with both a leisurely mile-long walk or more grueling 3.1-mile run offered.

"This annual donation means so much to the members of the Greenport Fire Department, as we use it to purchase needed equipment outside of our normal budget," said Chief Jeffrey Weingart of the GFD. "The John May Mile is such a wonderful yearly tradition that brings our community together and we are so thankful to be a part of it."

This year's event is expected to bring out more than 400 participants.

Since its founding in 2005, the annual John May Mile benefit has raised more than $260,500 for the Greenport Fire Department. Last year's event raised $20,715, which assisted with the purchase, refurbish and maintenance of vital rescue equipment.

Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. and the mile and 5K race begins at 10 a.m. A BBQ & Award Ceremony will follow at 11:30 a.m. The post-race festivity will include live music and an awards ceremony, prize auction and 50/50 raffle that will also support the Greenport Fire Department. The family-friendly affair will also feature a complimentary Kid Fun Zone with activities for all ages and yoga warm-up.

The morning, held in celebration of Older Americans Month will celebrate Dr. Z. Micah Kaplan of Eastern Long Island Hospital, who will be honored with the annual Older Americans Champion Award.

"Dr. Z. Micah Kaplan, M.D. has dedicated his time as a caring medical professional," said Robert J. Syron, President and CEO of Peconic Landing. "He is willing and available to anyone in need of medical attention, including our area older adults. Dr. Kaplan is a highly respected primary care physician, and we are so proud to honor him."

The entry fee for the 5K is $20 in advance and $15 for students. Registration on the day of is $25. The John May Mile entry fee is $10 per adult, $5 for 14 & under or 55 & older.
