After the Town of Southold received a grant from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to bolster existing trails, creating a path that would go from the Long Island Sound to Peconic Bay, the Town enlisted Group for the East End (G4EE) to spearhead the volunteer effort to launch the project, which began in April 2018.

Now, Group for the East End and the Town of Southold are ready to commence the third phase of the Bay to Sound Project, which entails cleaning up the series of recently created trails that connect Peconic Bay to the Long Island Sound in Southold and Greenport.

The community is encouraged to assist with this exciting initiative by attending a scheduled volunteer effort and exploration.

"It's vitally important that the community come out and take part in these scheduled trail projects as it is the next step following the Town's foresight and longterm protection of these North Fork preserves," stated Aaron Virgin, vice president of Group for the East End. "The work we are all doing is for the benefit of future generations to use and enjoy."

The third phase will begin on Sunday, October 7 with Explore Arshamomaque Preserve. During this family-friendly nature walk, taking place from 10 to 11:30 a.m., attendees will traverse through the newest section of Arshamomaque Preserve in search of animals of all sizes - including the resident River Otters - and the significant clues they leave behind. Participants will be on the lookout for footprints, nests, burrows, scrapings and animal signs, and G4EE experts will provide insight about native and invasive plants, vernal pools, and additional Bay to Sound Project happenings.

Next, G4EE will present a series of Trail Cleanups Throughout the Bay to Sound Trail System that will take place on Saturday, October 13 (at Arshamomaque Preserve - meet at Main and Pipes Neck Roads), Saturday, October 20 (at Pipes Neck Road - 1/8 South of Main Road), and Sunday, October 28 (at Arshamomaque Preserve - meet at Chapel Lane parking area). All three will be held from 8 to 10:30 a.m. The Cleanups will entail trail clearing, raking/spreading wood chips, and garbage removal from legacy dumping, and gloves, bags and other necessary equipment will be provided, as will water and snacks.
