The Kathleen D. Allen Maternity Center at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital is being recognized by the 2018 Healthgrades Women's Care Awards for the Hospital's Superior Performance in Labor and Delivery. The Kathleen D. Allen Maternity Center was among the top 10 percent of hospitals evaluated.

"We are very proud of our Maternity Center's experienced team of doctors, nurses, and staff. As the only maternity center on the South Fork of Long Island we average 770 births a year and provide the highest quality medical care," said Fredric I. Weinbaum, MD, Chief Medical Officer/Chief Operating Officer, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. "When needed, we also have a full-service maternal transport program with a specially-trained team in labor and delivery to care for the mother and baby in the event the birth occurs on route to Stony Brook, which provides the most advanced pediatric specialty care in the region."

Additionally, for the fourth consecutive year, the Kathleen D. Allen Maternity Center was named a Five-Star Recipient for Vaginal Delivery and C-Section Delivery.

"Stony Brook Southampton Hospital has the lowest primary cesarean section rateó16 percent --in the metropolitan area. When necessary, we have a dedicated, specially equipped state-of-the-art OR located directly in the Maternity Center," noted Vito Alamia, MD Vice Chair/Service Chief, OB/GYN, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. "We also have 0 percent elective induction at less than 39 weeks."

To determine the Women's Care Awards, Healthgrades, an online consumer resource for information about hospitals and physicians, analyzed patient all-payer data from 676 eligible hospitals in 15 states, as well as the District of Columbia from 2014-2016.

"Our Maternity Center is family-centric with private labor/delivery rooms designed to provide a compassionate, supportive, comfortable and medically safe birthing environment," explained Linda Fox, Nurse Manager of The Kathleen D. Allen Maternity Center at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. "Each is equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring capabilities for mother and baby. We also have 24-hour pediatric care, in-house lactation consultants, and facilitate the non-separation of mother and baby."

Stony Brook Southampton Hospital is a participant in the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Safe Motherhood Initiative (SMI), which partners with over 10,000 healthcare providers and 115 birthing facilities to create and carry out standard approaches to address obstetric emergencies concerning maternal mortality and morbidity. SMI includes a focus on the three top causes of maternal death, which include obstetric hemorrhage (severe bleeding), venous thromboembolism (blood clots), and severe hypertension in pregnancy (high blood pressure).
