Hamptons-Based "Artists Love Movies" Series Continues With "Spirited Away"

Olivia Rutigliano

The Artists Love Movies series presented by the Sag Harbor Cinema Arts Center continues on Sunday, September 2 with Spirited Away, with painter April Gornik.

Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away is one of the most successful titles out of Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli.

Compared to the likes of classics such as The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland, the story is about a 10-year-old who sees her parents turn into pigs and is thrown into a haunting but marvelous fantasyland populated by spirits, ghosts, monsters, and her creatures.

Released in 2001, the film still holds the record for highest grossing title in Japan. It also won an Academy Award for Best Animated Picture in 2003. Miyazaki won an honorary Oscar in 2015 as well. In 2016, the film was among the top five of BBC's 100 Greatest Films.

Painter and cultural philanthropist April Gornik focuses her work on atmospheric landscapes. Her works have been shown in the MET, MOMA, the Whitney, National Museum of American Art, National Museum of Women in the Arts, High Museum of Art and many other both public and private collections. Her and her husband, artist Eric Fischl live in Sag Harbor and are committed to projects and initiatives that support the local art community.

Joining April, who serves as the Sag Harbor Partnership Vice President, in discussion will be executive director of Guild Hall, Andrea Grover. Her extensive resume includes Century Arts Foundation Curator of Special Projects at Parrish Art Museum, Founding Director of Houston's Aurora Picture Show, as well as other programs at the Dia Art Foundation, The Menil Collection, and SXSW.

The screening and discussion will be held at the Pierson High School Auditorium at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for adults and free for children under 14.

Pierson High School is located at 200 Jermain Avenue in Sag Harbor. For more information visit, sagharborcinema.org.
