Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre To Present "Green Afternoon VI" In East Hampton

Olivia Rutigliano

Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre will host Green Afternoon VI, a Garden Dance Performance and Cocktail Reception, on Saturday, August 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. The annual interactive garden installation and performance will take place at the home of architects Marcia Previti and Peter Gumpel in East Hampton.

The evening will begin with cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and several outdoor sitting rooms featuring performances installations, with dancers in treehouses, on outdoor sculptures, in swimming pools, in the woods, and more.

After the moving installations, there will be a seated performance of Selwyn's developing work, Crossroads with dancers Torrey McAnena, Jarred Bosch, Manon Halley, Adam Dickerson, Alex Cottone, Sarah Starkweather, and Maggie Westerfield.

The new work by Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre explores the tumultuous process of self discovery and dive into unchartered waters. Selwyn collaborates with scenic and costume designer Anna-Alisa Belous to create a surreal landscape highlighting the moments at a crossroads, of a path divided, and how these moments steer the course of life.

Specializing in original dance that is meant to question and challenge social norms, the Theatre expresses the core themes in thought provoking dance.

Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre has presented over 65 productions at venues since it was founded in 2000 including Tribeca Performing Arts Center, New York Live Arts, Dance Theatre Workshop, Dance New Amsterdam, Danspace Project, Ailey Citigroup Theater, The Kumble Theater, John Jay College, and Mark Morris Dance Center and has been presented twice at Jacob's Pillow, Westfest, DUMBO Dance Festival, Dixon Place, Dance Teacher Summit, COOL NY, Movement Research, and Pushing Progress Series.

Additionally, the company has toured to festivals, presented open rehearsals, interactive performance events and workshops, and offered arts-in-education programming through Notes in Motion Outreach Dance Theatre to children in the New York City public schools.

"Amanda Selwyn is a master at illustrating the symbiosis of sound and movement, the romance of motion and emotion - she had me laughing, crying, cringing and gasping all in the short 55-minute production," lauded Inside New York.

NYC Dance Stuff noted, "Amanda Selwyn's work is masterly and emotionally expressive, she is truly gifted in art of dance making."

Tickets are $100 and can be purchased online at amandaselwyndance.org.

Green Afternoon VI is located at 230 Old Stone Highway in East Hampton.
