Local Artist Embraces Joy During New Exhibition At Quogue Library

Hammond's Ying and Yang.

On Thursday, February 1, Quogue Library will launch its February art exhibit, Katherine Hammond: Embracing Joy. Hammond's work will replace the January exhibit which showcased the paintings of Harvey Herman. Exhibits are curated by the Art Gallery Committee of the Library, which is comprised of twelve volunteers who live in Quogue that are passionate and knowledgeable about art.

The committee works with the Library year round to plan exhibits both for the indoor gallery and outdoors with exhibitions of sculptures. "The Quogue Library is honored that we have such a fine caliber of artists that exhibit here. It is always a refreshing pleasure seeing the new gallery shows," shared Adult Program Coordinator, Selina Pasca.

The committee aims to exhibit works that illustrate new concepts or trends in paint, photography, and sculpture by highlighting East End artists monthly. This February, the works of Hammond will boast artistic skill and bright colors with ink, watercolor, crayons, and collage. The artist's work expresses self-discovery and living in the moment--unfettered from past or future.

"The ideas materialize magically. It feels as though someone is guiding my brush," Hammond said.

Hammond studied fine art at Hunter College in New York. While working professionally in insurance, she continued to pursue her artwork, and since retiring, Hammond has worked out of her home in Shelter Island and shown in many galleries across Long Island.

"This exhibit is playful and colorful. I like seeing the movement displayed in this art," said Lonna Theiling, the Director of Quogue Library.

The exhibit will remain open until Tuesday, February 27.

Quogue Library is located at 90 Quogue Street in Quogue. For more information, please visit www.quoguelibrary.org.
