On Saturday, October 17th, the Parrish Art Museum
will hold a conversation and book signing with architect Salvatore LaRosa of B Five Studio, landscape architect Douglas Reed of Reed Hilderbrand
, and photographer Scott Frances to celebrate their new book, "One Place, Two Decades," which takes a look at 20 years of design in the progression of Hither ó an East Hampton country place where the authors began collaborating together in the early 1990s.
"Our 20-year involvement with Hither has enabled each of us to renew, sum up, and renew yet again the expressive capability of his own discipline," wrote LaRosa in his introduction to the book. "Doug, Scott, and I have continually reframed our perspectives on architecture, and the land, on the play of light and shadow across solid and voice that brings our crafts together."
The former site of a Gilded Age estate, Hither was transformed with the principle of villeggiatura, a peaceful yet lively getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. The collection of minimalist, modern houses and courts capture sight lines through quaint landscape that showcases local topographies and compilations of London plane and river birch trees. The team responsible for the rebuild hoped to find a nice balance between the past and present, with the mission of leaving the property with a timeless feel.
Charles Birnbaum, founder of The Cultural Landscape Foundation, will moderate the discussion, which will be followed by a reception and book signing. "One Place, Two Decades" will be available for purchase at the Museum Shop on the day of the program or can be pre-reserved online. "One Place, Two Decades" is $75, or $63.75 for Parrish Members.
"One Place, Two Decades:" Conversation and Book Signing will begin at 3 p.m. Admission is $10, but free for members.
