While many were traveling to the Hamptons at the start of Labor Day weekend, members of the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, Inc. (ARF) team were on their way to South Carolina for a very important reason.

ARF already had plans to rescue 23 dogs from South Carolina, but after learning from a concerned volunteer that an area shelter was about to shut its doors for good, and that all the animals at the shelter would be euthanized immediately, ARF knew that was just not in the cards for the animals in need. "We can't let this happen," Senior Director of Operations & Partnership Programs, Michele Forrester, said when she found out about the situation. ARF jumped into action and arranged to rescue an additional 23 dogs.

"Because of the timeliness of our rescue, the South Carolina foster families were able to pull an additional 22 dogs on Labor Day," shared Forrester. "These remaining dogs will be brought to ARF at the end of the month, with a total of 68 dogs rescued in the nick of time."

This rescue marks ARF's largest transport. The dogs from the pre-planned trip are currently living with foster families, as the other ones wait to make the trip up north before the shelter closes. Once they are brought to the ARF Adoption Center in Wainscott, they will be examined by ARF's full time Veterinarian Dr. Sarah Alward, spayed/neutered, microchipped and brought up to date on their vaccines. Following medical clearance, the rescue pups will wait at ARF to find their forever home.

Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons has rescued over 250 animals from South Carolina to date, and has eight more trips scheduled in 2015.

The ARF Adoption Center is located at 91 Daniels Hole Road in Wainscott. For more information, call 631-537-0400 or visit www.arfhamptons.org.
