Tall Ships Challenge Atlantic
Coast 2015 is coming to Greenport Village over 4th of July
weekend. During the festival, which will be held Saturday, July 4th through Tuesday, July 7th, the North Fork Village will celebrate six glorious ships that will be docked in the Village Harbor. The weekend will include ship tours, exhibits, live music, welcome ceremonies, and more.
This year, Claudio's
, the historic North Fork establishment, is sponsoring the ship Sagres, which is a ship that has particular meaning to the family.
"This is going to be a fabulous weekend that people will remember for the rest of their lives," Janice Claudio said. "The sight of so many extraordinary vessels in the harbor will be unlike anything we have ever seen. It is particularly exciting for Claudio's to sponsor the Sagres, a 300 foot Portuguese sailing vessel, which nods to our Portuguese origins
Back in 1854 when Greenport was a whaling town, ships from all over the world would look there for safe harbors to dock in. The young Manuel Claudio sailed with a Portuguese whaler named Neva. In 1870, Claudio saved enough money to be able to stay in Greenport, where he opened Claudio's Tavern. This began the start of 145 years of business for the Claudio family, with three restaurants on the waterfront.
"The tall ships festival is exciting in itself," William Claudio Jr. shared. "Having the opportunity to connect our family's heritage with the arrival of the Sagres is going to make this an unforgettable event."
A Captains' Welcome Reception at Peconic Landing
in Greenport will be held on Friday, July 3rd.
