"Neutering male pets is a simple surgery that reduces unwanted behaviors, like roaming, fighting, and urine marking territories," noted Pamela Green, Executive Director of Kent Animal Shelter. "It also guarantees your dog or cat never fathers a litter of puppies or kittens."

The Calverton Animal Shelter is hoping East End residents add one more resolution to their list for 2015. To encourage pet owners to get their male dog or cat neutered, they are holding a "Happy Neuter Year" campaign throughout January. PetSmart Charities is sponsoring event, which will provide $20 neuter surgeries for male dogs and cats all month long. The special price is even less than Kent's normal low-cost rate, and is available to all residents of Long Island.

Spaying and neutering is one of the most efficient ways to lower the homeless pet population. The procedure is safe for puppies and kittens as young as eight to 10 weeks old, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Pet owners who want to take advantage of the special rate must mention the "Happy Neuter Year" campaign when they schedule their appointment, and the campaign is based on availability.

Kent Animal Shelter is located at 2259 River Road in Calverton. For more information, call 631-727-5731 or visit www.kentanimalshelter.com.
