East End Hospice Hosts 20th Annual Pig Roast At Pindar Vineyards

On Saturday, May 31, 2014, East End Hospice hosted the 20th Annual North Fork Pig Roast Benefit at Pindar Vineyards in Peconic. It was a crisp, clear blue day with plenty of white clouds over the vineyard, a perfect way to kickoff the summer season on the North Fork.

The thick smell of charcoal wafted towards the crowd from tent where The Maple Tree Deli carved the main attraction, three pigs that had been roasted for nine hours. The Riverhead Deli also provided the pork smoked beans and cornbread, while Wendy's Deli in Mattituck donated green salad and delicious potato salad.

To wash down the BBQ, attendees could choose between Bud Light or wine donated by Pindar Vineyards, who offered their Pythagoras, a 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, their signature Winter White, Summer Blush, a 2012 Sauvignon Blanc, and a 2013 Riesling. East End Hospice volunteers who were manning the wine table enjoy the event because it incorporated, "good wine and good weather for a good cause."

The family friendly fundraiser included live music by the six-piece band, Romeo's Dream who played familiar crowd favorite tunes such as a covers of "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac, Adele's "Rolling in the Deep," and The Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." "We are so excited to be part of an event like this and East End Hospice does and amazing job," said Michele Romeo, lead singer of Romeo's Dream. "They were super organized and we are honored to be a part of this annual event." Other members of the band included Bill Cuume, Mike Laddeman, Jeanette Meyer, Tom Meyer, and Keith Radich.

"It was our 20th Annual North Fork Pig Roast Fundraiser. We had close to 500 attendees and it was one of our best years ever," noted Debbie Doyle, Event Coordinator. "We don't have our numbers in yet, but we are hoping that we raise close to $15,000. This is not a huge fundraiser for us, but more of a community awareness event for East End Hospice." "The people love it," she raved. "We have such loyal volunteers and donors that enable us make this event happen. Pindar graciously donates their venue every year and this saves us a tremendous amount of money. Our event was a complete success and we look forward to an even better one in 2015!"

Supporters of the event said it was nice to people watch throughout the evening. "It's a great event. There is plenty of good food," noted one attendee. "I can't complain. Good food and good company, what more could a person ask for?" Even the young ones were kept busy with a bouncy castle, a beaded arts and crafts table, pig face painting, as well as cotton candy.

It was a community effort as Hospice volunteers donated cases of beverages, and Braun Seafood Co. donated their truck to transport them with ice. A volunteer also made delicious chocolate cake pops with peach colored icing and pink M&M noses to make them look like piglets. The Southold, Mattituck, Greenport, Navy Jr. ROTC volunteers helped distribute beverages to guests and also helped supervise the kids table. This was their 11th year assisting at the event, according to Major Bill Gringonis.
