Surf and Sport will join the Pridwin Hotel
in sponsoring the Great Peconic Race in honor of Ted Baldwin
on Monday, July 15, 2013. The 19-mile long benefit race circumnavigates Shelter Island, NY, as a way to pay tribute to Baldwin's love for the bays. The event will begin and end at the Pridwin Hotel on Shelter Island, with all proceeds being donated to the Peconic Baykeeper
. The Peconic Baykeeper organization is an independent, non-profit advocate dedicated to the protection and restoration of aquatic ecosystems in the Long Island area.
The event is an open race, with contention offered to multiple classes of vessels that are powered by oar or paddle, including kayaks, surfskis, or paddleboards. The organizers of the race have stressed that participants should expect typical open bay conditions that can include strong winds and currents. A heavy emphasis will be placed on safety, with powerboat escorts and EMT's available, but the sponsors have made it clear that there will also be periods of time when participants must be independent and self-sufficient. To accommodate less experienced participants, paddlers will have the option of completing a half course race or participating in a multiple person relay. Despite these options, the competition is not a suggested event for beginners.

After the race is completed, the barbecue will continue with an after party for the participants along with an awards ceremony. The night will also feature prize money, raffles, a speech by Baykeeper Kevin McAllister
, and a special award given in memory of Ted Baldwin.
Registration is $75 per participant before the evening of July 14. Paddlers who miss this deadline
can still register for $85 on the morning of the race. Participants should arrive at 7 a.m. the morning of the race. Ships will launch beginning at around 8 a.m. and the race will conclude at 3 p.m.
