Choral Society Of The Hamptons And South Fork Chamber Orchestra Presents A Baroque Christmas

"A Baroque Christmas," the holiday concert from the Choral Society of the Hamptons and South Fork Chamber Orchestra will take place on Sunday, December 9. The concert will feature animated rhythms, soaring themes, musical contrasts, a full chamber orchestra, and fluid passages sung by professional soloists.

The programs which is conducted by the society's music director, Mark Mangini, will begin and end with settings of the celebratory Magnificat, legendarily sung by Mary before the birth of Jesus. The performance will feature work from Neapolitan composer Giovanni Pergolesi, Venetian master Antonio Vivaldi, a Christmas Cantata by Marc Antoine Charpentier, "In Dulci Jubilo" by Dietrich Buxtehude and the celebrated Christmas Concerto by Arcangelo Corelli.

During the 3 p.m. performance, the chorus will be joined by the East Hampton High School Vocal Camerata, directed by David Douglas, during a lyrical setting of "Angels We Have Heard on High." Both concerts will close with the society's traditional presentation of familiar carols for audience singing.

Soloists, Suzanne Schwing (mezzo soprano) and Mischa Bouvier (bass) have won ovations here for their performances with the society in "Messiah" last year, and Bach's Christmas Oratorio the year before. Mary Hubbell and Emily Eagan, (sopranos) and J. Andy McCullough (tenor) are making their Choral Society debuts.

Before the concerts stop by the benefit brunch at Pierre's restaurant (2468 Main Street, Bridgehampton, 631-537-5110) which costs $200 per person. There will be a free reception and silent auction will following the final concert at 7 p.m. in the Bridgehampton Community House (843 County Road 79, Bridgehampton, 631- 537-2806).

If you cannot make the either of the concerts, The Choral Society is releasing its first commercially-available recording in December, which will showcase their performance of Handel's "Messiah" from last year with orchestra and soloists. Copies are expected to be available in local stores that carry CDs along with on the Society's website or downloaded at www.cdbaby.com.

"A Baroque Christmas," will take place on on Sunday, December 9, at the Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church with performances at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Tickets can be bought from members of the chorus in advance for $25 or at the door for $35. For those under 18, tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.
