Because Jessica White is the face of Maybelline
, they always donate a gift bag full of goodies and this years raffle items included hand bags from Ferragamo and Elie Tahari
, a dress off the runway from Charlotte Ronson
, vip tickets to Tenacios D at Hamerstein Ball room and a 7 day meal plan delivered to your house by Fresh Diet.
Among the many notables attending in support of White's foundation were singer Shontelle
, editor/actress Devorah Rose, celebrity jeweler Jeffrey Rackover
(who designed White's stunning earrings and braclet), and the inimitable Russell Simmons
. Food, fun and celebrity aside, the evening's mission was to raise awareness of a tragedy to humanity that is almost unthinkable.
Somaly Mam is a non-profit organization working to "eradicate human trafficking, liberate its victims and empower survivors so they can create and sustain lives of dignity." As hard as it may be to imagine in the 21st Century human slavery still exists, particularly in Southeast Asia and parts of Africa. The victims are predominantly young women and girls, sometimes as young as five, sold into sexual slavery and prostitution.
White's passion for this vital mission is profound, "It is about educating to understand that this is not normal. This is not something they are suppose to be involved in, but when it is happening on a consistent basis there is no sense of what is right and wrong. Even in America, as we speak, slavery is going on. Every ten seconds a woman or a child is being sexually abused."
She further explained, "It is about de-programming a world, an environment that has been going on for a very long time. It is not only affecting women and children in places like Somalia, but even here in the United States."
Singer Shontelle was equally impassioned in describing her support for Somaly Mam, "It is almost a secret tragedy that no one wants to address or talk about or admit it is even happening, so I can only support a charity like Jessica's that is bringing awareness to it and trying to help these girls."
Charity is usually the primary element in most of the Hamptons' toney summer happenings. Considering the wealth of treasure in our community, it certainly should be and Somaly Mam is as important as any charity that will be celebrated and supported this Hamptons' season.
