New York City - Many of those gathered for cocktails last week to support the May 11 Solar One gala began their charitable life in the Hamptons.

Christine Mortimer Biddle - who with Biddle and Bellidora Communications partner Carole Bellidora Westfall produces the event - was one of the first Junior Chairs of the Southampton Hospital gala. In her 20s, Barbara Dana Tollis was Junior Chair of the Parrish Art Museum's Midsummer Party.

Sitting next to Hartley du Pont in a cushy sofa, a Central Park vista behind her, Tollis reminisced to Hamptons.com. The Junior Committee girls, she said, learned from such Senior Chairwomen (and social lionesses) as Fernanda Niven and Senga Mortimer. "The day of the benefit, we started working at 7 a.m.," Tollis told us. "We'd go to the fields by Seven Ponds and pick wildflowers for the table arrangements. We'd work all morning, get hungry and run to my house nearby in Southampton."

Tollis usually looks forward: helping children is her priority. And Solar One boasts the first solar-powered "Green Energy, Arts, and Education Center." Executive Director Christopher Collins told the room what began as a public school one-day enrichment program to raise environmental awareness is now a seven hour a day program in partnership with the Department of Education. For adults, Solar's Workforce Training program places hard to employ participants in green related jobs.

Solar One's annual "Revelry By The River" gala will be held on Monday, June 11 at Guastavino's. The Chairs of the dinner are Jen Bawden, Hartley du Pont, Margo Langenberg and Jean Shafiroff. The Junior Chairs are Katie Corrigan, Maggie DeFilippo, Nicole Rhodes and August du Pont.

What did Christine Biddle remember from her Southampton Hospital days? "It was long ago," she mused, "And much smaller."
