- Riding on the heels of such well-known adventurer authors as Jack Kerouac and Roald Dahl, long-term resident and long-distance biker Phil Berg
is pleased to announce the publication of his second book after "Travels With Umma" - "What A Ride."
"Riding my motorcycle, doing the next right thing, and continuing my commitment to sobriety," Berg is preparing for local readings at The Montauk Book Shop, December 23, 2011, at 5 p.m., and Mary's Marvelous in Amagansett on December 24, 2011, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Embarking next on another winter adventure as yuletide dog treats dance in sidekick Umma's dreams, Berg continues to live his own dream, traveling and meeting people from all walks of life. "To me, freedom is a dog with no leash."
Starting out as a tree trimmer before moving on to lumber jacking and sawing trees into dimensional lumber, Berg has made much of his varied knowledge and skills locally for over 20 years. He's found satisfaction in helping transform superior strength elm and white oak toward machinability use, cherry ash toward shock absorption purposes, walnut toward gunstocks, and much more.
"Helping turn nature into stuff folks can use is a great feeling. When I got a new bike after 25 years I felt the same way. It helped me ride into the world wherever I wanted to go, and because Umma is on the back, no matter where we stop, it's an instant conversation. The beauty of the bike is that I'm like a tree. Every conversation means something."
