Suffolk County Community College's Culinary Arts program students have the opportunity to showoff their newly acquired skills to some very special guests this holiday season. For the second year in a row, the College will curate and execute delectable Thanksgiving meals whipped up by the rising stars for Community Action Southold Town's (CAST). The seasonal smorgasbord will also be donated to the Greenport food pantry and Clinton Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church.

This marks the tenth overall year that more than 35 culinary students, as well as faculty, have generously lent a helping hand by volunteering their culinary expertise to whip up a whopping number of meals for neighbors in the community in need.

"We celebrate Thanksgiving by cooking and sharing our favorite foods, being with the ones we love and giving thanks for all that we have," reflected Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay.

The volunteers will gather at Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts & Hospitality Center in Riverhead on Wednesday, November 21 to prepare the nearly 200 Thanksgiving meals with ingredients provided by CAST. Throughout the afternoon, the student and faculty chefs will work on over 20 turkeys, 100 pounds of mashed potatoes, 50 pounds of sweet potatoes, 80 pounds of stuffing, 25 pounds of assorted vegetables and 40 pies. And, as you can't have turkey without gravy - there will be over five gallons cooked. Once complete, the sumptuous Thanksgiving meals will be individually packaged.

"Our college and students, faculty and staff enjoy giving back to our community," Dr. McKay added. "A Happy Thanksgiving to all!"

Additionally, CAST is hosting a Toy Drive from November 26 to December 17. New, unwrapped toys can be dropped off at Legislator Al Krupski's office at the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Riverhead; the Mattituck-Laurel Library, Bridgehampton National Bank, or Capital One Bank in Mattituck; Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library or People's United Bank in Cutchogue; Southold Free Library, Bridgehampton National Bank, Southold Town Hall, Mullen Motors, The Giving Room, or Fitness Advantage in Southold; or the Floyd Memorial Library, CAST Office, Greenport American Legion, Bridgehampton National Bank, or Capital One Bank in Greenport.

CAST, a not-for-profit based in Southold Town since 1965, assists low-income residents meet basic needs offering aid with nutrition, employment, energy, and education. CAST, which relies on the generosity of the community, operates from Laurel to Orient Point, including Fisher's Island.
