As summer draws to a close, a nearly two-decade tradition, East End Hospice
's Box Art Auction Benefit, will once again offer the unique chance to scoop up an exception, one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
"This year, some 90 East End artists have contributed their time, talent and singular creativity to produce these unique works of portable art for this most worthy cause," noted Benefit Chair Arlene Bujese
. "I'm so impressed how each year the artists create more new inventive works."
Artists take small, donated cigar and wine boxes and transform them into extraordinary works that are auctioned off in support of East End Hospice. Creations highlight traditional landscapes, abstract art, ceramics, sculpture, painting, collage, assemblage, needlework on fabric, and other mediums.
2019 participants include Stephanie Brody-Lederman
, Eric Dever, Terry Elkins
, Janet Goleas, Carol Hunt
, James Kennedy
, Christa Maiwald
, Louise Peabody, Dan Rizzie
, Randall Rosenthal, Toni Ross
, Hans van de Bovenkamp, and many, many more. Numerous artists have lent their talent since the Auction's inception and there will be 11 newbies this year.
"When I make a new box for the event," longtime participant, artist Casey Chalem Anderson
explained, "I feel deeply connected to the incredible work that East End Hospice does. The hospice worker who arrived at 11 p.m. at night to help me care for my Dad was an angel who brought understanding, peace, and calm to a situation that was filled with anxiety."
The Auction at Hoie Hall of St. Luke's Church in East Hampton will kick-off with a public preview on Wednesday, August 21 and Thursday, August 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will also be a "Meet the Artists" reception on Wednesday, August 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. The Box Art Silent Auction and Reception will take place on Saturday, August 24 from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
In addition to showcasing the magnificent works, the Auction will honor the East Hampton Lions Club, who will receive East End Hospice's 2019 Spirit of Community Award for their generosity to East End Hospice and other vital resources in the community.
All proceeds from the Auction will support East End Hospice, whose mission is to "provide care and comfort for all terminally ill patients, their families and loved ones living on the North and South Forks of Long Island, including Brookhaven Township. Health care professionals and volunteers offer pain and symptom control as well as palliative care and social, emotional and spiritual support to patients and their loved ones in a comfortable and caring environment."
"Each year East End Hospice provides expert end-of-life care to nearly 700 terminally ill patients," noted Mary Crosby, President and CEO of East End Hospice. "We support families and friends who have lost a loved one through our adult and children's bereavement programs, which now include equine, pet and music therapy. Because we receive generous support from donors, we are able to ensure that no patient or family ever receives a bill for the excellent care we provide."
Admission to the Box Art Silent Auction and Reception is $75, which includes wine and hors d'oeuvres.
