Sag Harbor Cinema's MovieVan To Bring Screenings Directly To East End Audiences

We still may have to wait to watch a film in the newly renovated Sag Harbor Cinema (SHC), but thanks to a generous donation from Robert and Suzanne Harwood, SHC can now bring the cinematic experience right to you.

The Harwood's contribution allowed Sag Harbor Cinema to procure the Sag Harbor Cinema MovieVan, a custom rigged- and painted Ford Transit cargo van, complete with everything needed to host an epic at home, outdoor movie night, such as an inflatable screen, portable projectors, and powered outdoor speakers.

"The potential of the van was obvious to Rob and I as soon as it was proposed. The van is a fun and flexible way to extend the entertainment and educational power of film beyond the walls of our new Cinema and into the broader community," noted Suzanne.

"Suzanne's gift came to us in the dark of December, and we leapt at the opportunity," added Sag Harbor Cinema Executive Director Jamie Hook. "With so much uncertainty surrounding the opening of cinemas, the MovieVan was a no-brainer, allowing us to travel our programming to distant communities in a safe, outdoor environment that is more accessible (and environmentally friendly!) than your average drive-in theater."

The MovieVan is already in high demand, with the Cinema in talks with Sag Harbor Cycle Company, Montauk Historical Society, the Longhouse Reserve, SANS community of Sag Harbor, and more about movie nights.

Sag Harbor Cycle Company hopes to utilize the MovieVan for East End Bike-In, a bicycle-friendly screening series at sites such as Marine Park in Sag Harbor, the Plaza in Montauk, and Agawam Park in Southampton. Expected to take place on Sundays throughout the summer, screenings will revolve around bicycle-themed movies - likeBreaking Away, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, and Bicycle Thieves. There will also be a complimentary pop-up bike repair clinic, bike gear for purchase, and hopefully a pedal-powered 21-speed smoothie-bar onsite. "We are very excited to be part of this program," expressed Sag Harbor Cycle's Jason Lucas. "Cycling also has a great community and this is an opportunity for people who have recently discovered cycling because of the pandemic, to meet and feel included in that community."

Montauk Historical Society (MHS) plans to not only offer viewings at the Second House facility in Montauk, but also at the iconic Montauk Lighthouse. "We are so excited about the possibility of bringing films to the people of Montauk," reflected MHS Director Mia Certic. "The Second House offers a wonderful environment for family outdoor activities, and we are pleased to invite the MovieVan to help us activate this and our other spaces throughout the summer."

The MovieVan potentially could also be used for a weekly outdoor summer screening at Mashashimuet Park, a special Wednesday night "Boat-In" screening at Marine Park in July, and a collaboration with OLA of Eastern Long Island.

For those with ample outdoor space, the MovieVan is also available for private rentals.
