will wrap up with a very special performance featuring the series' founder, Nancy Remkus
, along with Daniel Koontz, on Friday, June 7.
"The final concert of the fifth annual Songwriters Share Concert Series
will offer a lot of musical variety and an evening celebrating the conclusion of another successful year-in which we donated to six local charities," Remkus noted.
Previous 2019 Songwriters Share headliners include Points East who played in support of Maureen's Haven
, Inda Eaton
who played in support of Project Most
, Caroline Doctorow
who played in support of Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt, Fred Raimondo who played in support of The Retreat
, Gene Casey
who played in support of Turtle Rescue of the Hamptons.
Remkus, a longtime East End music scene fixture, will be accompanied by several friends for the concert, including clarinetist David Cummings, college friends Teri McManus and Lee Morris, drummer Bruce Beyer and bass player Bucky Silipo.
The third generation Sag Harbor native taught herself how to play guitar at just 14-years-old and has been creating her own tunes ever since. She studied Music Therapy in college and found an internship in South Carolina, but eventually settled back in her hometown. The now retired elementary
school teacher helped to create Sag Harbor Elementary School's Morning Program, a groundbreaking program that provides a chance for students, teachers, staff and parents to start each day together, sharing and commemorating life.
Remkus, winner of the 1989 Suffolk County Performing Artist of The Year, has been lauded as "a blend of Joan Baez
, Joni Mitchell
, and throw in a dash of the 1970's show, The Electric Company and a pinch of Mr. Rogers." Throughout her career, she has released four CDs and performed at numerous local venues.
"In addition to supporting these charities the Songwriters Share Concert Series has been a wonderful way for the community to come together-to hear good music, listen to what has inspired songwriters to write their songs and also for warm receptions following each concert which offered camaraderie and conversation," she shared. "This day and age it is important for people to come together and build community-and the warmth of this time together has been almost as wonderful as the music."
For the series that gives back to the community finale, Remkus has selected The Sag Harbor Food Pantry as the evening's beneficiary.
"The Sag Harbor Food Pantry is a very active organization which serves the Sag Harbor community with wonderful food and necessities," Remkus said about the cause she selected to champion. "There is need right here in our community and the food pantry helps many local families meet those needs."
Koontz's solo sounds span a variety of genres, ranging from funk and blues to country and even pop. He also plays keyboard for several bands, including HooDoo Loungers
, the Rum Hill Rockers, and Sarah Conway
and the Playful Souls
For his Songwriters Share set, he will be joined by Bruce Beyer and guitarist Brett King.
The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. and a complimentary reception will follow. General Admission is $20 and $15 for seniors and students.
