Artists of Shelter Island (ARTSI) will host their tenth annual open studios event Saturday, August 17 and Sunday, August 18 from 12 to 5 p.m. Founded by Shelter Island artists of various disciplines and styles, the ARTSI studio tour has become a summer highlight for locals as well as visiting art lovers who come to the East End of Long Island.
"It is thrilling to be celebrating 10 years of ARTSI and our annual open studios event. Not much seems to have staying power anymore, so the fact that a group of local artists could come together and establish an organization and a community event that has remained popular for a decade is so gratifying," relayed Katherine Hammond
, one of the artists, original founding members of ARTSI and chief organizer of the annual event. "All the artists of ARTSI look forward to see our friends, neighbors and curious art seekers on August 17 & 18."
Sixteen artists will be welcoming visitors to their studios including: Sally Jacobs Baker, Janet Culbertson
, Kathryn A. Cunningham, Roz Dimon, Melora Griffis, Katherine Hammond, Megan Hergrueter, Karen Kiaer, Diana Malcomson, Jacky Pullman; Linda Puls, Joe Reilly, Susan Schrott, Jana Sheinker, Peter Waldner, and Mike Zisser. While the artwork is for sale, and many of the artists accept commission, visitors are welcome to simply come and enjoy the experience of seeing art in the very varied spaces where it is created.
Nicolette Klein says of the event, "Visiting the studios of such an array of artists gave me a totally new and different perspective on the art works and the artistic process. And, it's such a joy to meet our community's artists. I am so looking forward to doing it again this year."
Small by design, membership to the group is selective; it is juried by a group of five who make decisions each January from requests for membership by carefully examining the artist's body of work and background. While a formal degree in art is not required— many members are retired from other professions—the group looks for fine artists who pursue their work full-time. Among the members are photographers, painters, digital artists, sculptors and mixed media artists.
There is no fee to explore the featured spaces.
