The Sea And Sky Meet At Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum

Foggy Day by Whitney B Hansen.

The Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum will present a new exhibit, Sea and Sky, featuring the works of Whitney B. Hansen, Paton Miller and Scott Bluedorn, starting Friday, June 22.

The exhibit expresses texture, layering, colors and various mediums and subjects. The beauty is there, sought as deep as the sea and as limitless as the sky. The artists embrace the creativity and highlight these themes in their work.

"The original theme was a multidimensional show. Hensen and Miller are more established in their careers than Scott Bluedorn who is only about 30. [The exhibit] shows something more mature as well as newer perspective. We thought the juxtaposition would be a good mix," said Michael Butler, Associate Manager at the Museum.

Hansen, a California native, has been painting professionally for most of her life. Her work spans the spectrum from still life and portraits to sea and landscapes. Her medium of choice is oil and she utilizes the woodcut process, hand painting layers over the wood creating a spectacular final effect. Her paintings have been featured in group and solo shows in New York, Boston, Chappaqua, Santa Barbara, and Paris.

Miller arrived on the the East End of Long Island in 1974 after an extensive journey through Asia, a long way from his home in Hawaii. His collection of travel inspired artworks won him a scholarship at Southampton College where he graduated with honors. Miller has been featured in over 20 solo and numerous group exhibitions in New York City and throughout the U.S. Today his works are displayed internationally, including cities such as Florence and Shanghai.

Bluedorn, born and raised in the Hamptons, works as an artist, illustrator, and designer in various forms of media, including paintings, drawings, print process, and found object assemblage. Inspired by cultural anthropology, primitivism, and nautical tradition, he distill imagery speaks to the collective unconscious through what he calls "maritime cosmology," mythical and visual storytelling.

An opening reception for Sea and Sky will take place on Friday, June 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. and the exhibit will run through Sunday, July 15.

The Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum is located at 220 Main Street in Sag Harbor. For more information, call 631-725- 0770 or visit www.sagharborwhalingmuseum.org.
