Last November the Parrish Art Museum celebrated its 5th anniversary in its Herzog & de Meuron-designed building in Water Mill. The Museum commemorated the milestone anniversary with Five and Forward: 5th Anniversary Weekend - a plethora of programming that paid tribute to move. The festivities included the premiere of Five and Forward, a reinstallation of the Permanent Collection.

Alicia G. Longwell, the Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator, Art and Education at the Parrish Art Museum, will provide insight about the 2018 Permanent Collection during The Curator's View on Friday, January 12 at 6 p.m.

The eleven-gallery installation showcases artists whose work encompasses major trends, themes, and notions in American art history, and also emphasizes the East End's artistic legacy. Thematic exhibitions - including Into the Wood[s] - which delves into the topic as both a material and subject, and The Nature of Abstraction: Geometry, Color, Shape, and Form, which covers varied approaches to abstraction comprising works from nearly a half century (1954 to 2005) by a myriad of artists, including Theodore Stamos's oil painting After Enda (1954) and Eric Freeman's Red Inside Green (2005) - boast nearly 100 works.

"I always look forward to talking about the collection and the many ideas that come into play when thinking about a new installation," said Longwell. "I very much enjoy hearing the responses from those who attend."

The Permanent Collection also includes galleries devoted to James Brooks (1906-1992) - whose adoration for the East End is documented in The Shinnecock Years, paintings by Abstract Expressionist William Merritt Chase (1849 -1916), and Alan Shields (1944-2005) - whose life-long fascination with textiles and the needle arts is explored in Common Threads. Additionally, the exhibition also highlights an exploration of the Parrish by Rashid Johnson (American, b.1977).

2018 Permanent Collection: Five and Forward will remain on view through Wednesday, October 31.

Admission to The Curator's View is $12, but free for members, children, and students.

The Parrish Art Museum is located at 279 Montauk Highway in Water Mill. For more information, call 631-283-2118 or visit parrishart.org.
