The well-known, and easily recognizable leather-clad architect and art collector, Peter Marino, recently announced his plans to open a new public exhibition space at 11 Jobs Lane in Southampton by restoring the 1895 Rogers Memorial Library building located next to the Southampton Arts Center (SAC), to be called, appropriately enough, the Peter Marino Art Foundation (PMAF).

Construction will begin in September 2019, and at nearly 8,000 square feet, the two-story structure will feature a permanent showcase of Marino's personal art collection, and will also include exhibitions of local guest artists and collaborators. Additionally, the PMAF will work closely with the SAC to offer educational programs appealing to visitors of all ages and students.

Marino announced his plans at the SAC opening for Counterpoint: Selections from The Peter Marino Collection, which was the first public reveal for the PMAF. The exhibition will run through September 23.

The award-winning Marino began Peter Marino Architect PLLC in 1978, and his visions have extended globally as reflected in both residential and commercial structures in New York City, Chicago, Tokyo, Seoul, Paris and Beijing, where he has successfully blended architecture with interior design "by integrating art within his architectural designs."

Having generously shared his vast personal art collection with numerous entities over the years, the PMAF in Southampton will certainly provide an exciting venue for both artists of the Hamptons and beyond, as well as visitors to view and appreciate works they may otherwise never have the opportunity to enjoy.

Hamptons.com caught up with the very busy Marino to pose a few questions:

It's evident that Southampton Village holds a special place in your heart; what is your connection to the area? We are aware of the building's history, but what about yours - what drove you to this location to house your private collection?

PM: My wife and I have been here since the early 90's and we came here because we love the village of Southampton. We love the village, we love the trees, we love Lake Agawam, the inlet, the ducks and the swans. I've been working on architectural projects in the Hamptons for over 30 years, as well as homes for private clients. For my own home, I've been working on its gardens (in Southampton) for over 20 years.

How will the PMAF benefit the local community in terms of its residents and local businesses?

PM: When the Parrish museum left for Water Mill it unfortunately left a hole in Southampton in terms of dedication to the visual arts within the village. We intend to restore 11 Jobs Lane to its original purpose. Counterpoint: Selections from The Peter Marino Collection which opened on July 28 and will end on September 23 (at Southampton Arts Center next door) is a taste of the art that will be at the Peter Marino Art Foundation. Hopefully it will be a premier spot for art - for anywhere in the world.

How will the PMAF work with the Southampton Arts Center? Is there a partnership or some kind of agreement in place? Is the new Foundation right next door supposed to be in competition with the art center - even if it's friendly?

PM: So far our connection is in the discussion phases. There are many synergies that have been identified and joint efforts are our goal.

Who are some of the rotating artists and collaborators you plan to bring to the museum?

PM: Too early to divulge! Stay tuned!

Construction is set to begin September 2019: Can you tell us more about the building's renovations (interior/exterior); do you have renderings yet? If so, can we see them?

PM: Not yet, we will be working on it this coming year.
