Top 13 Hamptons Beach Bag Essentials (And Few Extra We Just Love)

When you're hitting the beach in the Hamptons this summer you need to remember the Girl Scout motto and "Be Prepared!" You never know what situation you might face - the cute surfer who wants to chat with you while you're waiting in line for the Ditch Witch or when the battery on your Kindle dies and you've nothing to read. These are our "must pack" finds for a day at the beach!

1. The Bag! The perfect beach bag needs to be roomy and have pockets for the little things that always get lost at the bottom under the wet towels and flip flops. Our fave bag is the large canvas tote at C. Wonder. The sturdy handle can lift anything you pack in there and the gold details give it a hit of elegance. ($78. C. Wonder, 5 Main Street, Southampton, www.cwonder.com)

2. Sun Smarts! Sure, you want to catch a tan at the beach but you don't want to wreck your day with serious sunburn. Top on our skincare shelf is Hampton Sun Continuous Mist Sunscreen SPF 35, you get great protection even while splashing in the waves and the Privet Bloom scent is a nice change from the coconut we all grew up with. ($32. www.hamptonssuncare.com)

3. No one wants the pimples that result from thick sun block on your face but no one wants wrinkles either. We love Neutrogena Clear Face sun protection SPF 30 - it's light and really works. (under $9. Rite Aid, 82 Nugent Street, Southampton)

4. Worried that your color will fade? A quick spritz of Angelo David Salon Long & Strong Detangler is just what you need before you hit the pool or beach. Green Tea keeps the environmental baddies at bay and the sun filter keeps your color 'salon perfect'. ($17.50. www.angelodavid.com)

5. Bad hair is a big no-no no matter what and on the beach tangles and snarls are impossible. The Goody QuickStyle Paddle Brush is a godsend! It's a strange combo of bristles and mini microfiber bits that helps your hair dry fast with every swipe. Looks crazy but trust us, it works! ($14. Target, 1150 Old Country Road, Riverhead)

6. Glare at the beach is brutal and the sand and surf is killer to your favorite tablet reader so you'll need to pack a book or two or three. Herman Melville's great-great-great-granddaughter Liza Klaussmann's "Tigers in Red Weather" is a Gastby-esque novel set in Martha's Vineyard. If time-travel romance is your thing, check out "Hostage in Time" by Linda Lauren. If you like action-adventure thrillers you'll flip the pages of Jeffrey S. Stephens' "Targets of Deception" faster than the waves at Coopers Beach in Southampton. (prices vary. Books & Books, 130 Main Street, Westhampton Beach)

7. Boo-boos happen a lot at the beach between SUP-ing and surfing, sand rash is harsh but covering up doesn't need to look like you spent the day at the Emergency Room. We love these cute bandages by Cynthia Rowley for Band Aid. The Band-Aid Beach Sport Kit comes in fun designs with seahorses, waves, sunsets, even zipper designs and little packets of Neosporin all in a sporty yellow or bright blue zip top kit that you can use over and over again. ($12. Cynthia Rowley at The Capri, 281 Country Road 39A, Southampton)

8. Chapped lips are a major no-no! Softlips balms are the perfect lip refresher that will keep your pucker perfect in and out of the salty water. With so many colors and SPF varieties to choose from there's something for everyone. (under $4. IGA, 92 North Main Street, East Hampton)

9. Australian Gold Soothing Aloe Gel is really refreshing and smells great - with or without a bit of a burn it quenches the skin. (under $10. www.amazon.com)

10. Kiss My Face's Kids Sunblock Sticks aren't just for kids! They go on in color but turn clear and really prevent sunburn on places you always forget like ears and noses. ($10.99. White's Pharmacy, 81 Main Street, East Hampton)

11. Sun got your eyes all puffy? You'll love the kick of caffeine in Obagi's ELASTIderm Eye Complete Complex Serum. Keep it in the cooler and swipe it on before you head off the beach to refresh your tired peepers. ($90. Available from select dermatologists only)

12. If you're going straight from the beach out to dinner you'll need a quick splash of perfume (it's OK, we all do it!). There's something so perfect about Calvin Klein's "Eternity Summer" fragrance. It's light and sensual blend of white musk, orange blossom, and gardenia that is just perfect with a bit of seaspray. ($58. White's Pharmacy, 81 Main Street, East Hampton)

13. Finish off the day with Hampton Sun Serious Shimmer Cooling Spray in bronze for a cooling glow to get you from the beach to the club. ($32. www.hamptonssuncare.com)

Need to fake a trip to the beach? Now problem! All you need is a little Surf Spray by Bumble & Bumble ($24. Bumbleandbumble.com) and a few Goody elastics with gold and silver tone accents (under $5 at most drugstores) to make a messy, wavy style. Guys might want to try Garnier Fructis Surf Hair texturizing paste (under $4. www.amazon.com) Add a touch of Clinique Superbalanced Bronzer powder that comes in the cutest little bag (34.50. Macy's, 180 West Montauk Highway, Hampton Bays) for the quickest fake tan ever. Then finish with a quick mani/pedi with Duality Cosmetics Nail-Pak in Cool Coral that has a nail file and remover pads all-in-one ($15. www.dualitycosmetics.com). Voila, you look like you just got off the beach!
