LIMPIA (Long Island Marine Purification Initiative) is hosting a three part fundraising event in Montauk on Saturday, August 11.

"Simply learning that the water out east where we surf and swim and fish is not, in fact, pristine," Luke Weil told us is what inspired him to found LIMPIA - which translates to "clean" in Spanish. "I learned this after going surfing one day after a big rain and getting sick."

Weil created The Long Island Marine Purification Initiative, a 501c3 non-profit organization, to address the issue of water quality on the East End, raise awareness about the problem, and inspire long-term change.

LIMPIA's Summer Fundraiser will start with sunset drinks featuring sips from Casamigos Tequila, Reyka Vodka, Ron Flor de Cana Rum, and Hudson Whiskey at Sean Mcpherson's The Crow's Nest from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by an intimate dinner. The night will carry on with drinks and dancing at LIMPIA Board Member Jayma Cardoso's The Surf Lodge from 10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

The Crow's Nest overlooks Long Island's largest pond, Lake Montauk, which is in danger after catastrophic loss of eelgrass and a severe decline in the natural shellfish population.

The Surf Lodge is situated by the Montauk Peninsula which is home to 148 species that are on the state and federal list of endangered or threatened species, including the leatherback sea turtle, finback whale and humpback whale.

With increased population and tourism in the area, LIMPIA's work is essential to the survival and preservation of marine life and delicate ecosystems. Funding from this benefit will support local environmental organizations, including CCOM, Surfrider, Dutch Plains Association, and Defend H2O, earmarked for water quality projects.

Tickets to the cocktail hour are $125, tickets to dinner are $250 and tickets to the after party are $125.

The Crow's Nest is located at 4 Old West Lake Drive in Montauk and The Surf Lodge is located at 183 Edgemere Street in Montauk. For more information, visit www.limpia.org.
