, Long Island's only nationally accredited Lifecare community, has received a Platinum-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its new expansion apartment building.
The LEED certificate serves to commemorate designs whose main goals are energy and hard resource saving. The primary goal is supporting sustainability in building projects in our community.
"Peconic Landing's LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership," said Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO, USGBC. "Peconic Landing serves as a prime example of how the work of innovative building projects can use local solutions to make a global impact on the environment."
Peconic Landing has demonstrated excellent cost-efficiency and energy-saving in its new "green" projects. Inside, they have installed low-flow fixtures and shower heads, reducing water usage by 20 percent, incorporated Energy Star appliances, triple-insulated the walls of the homes to ensure a regulated temperature, and is even actively encouraging residents to use green cleaners and detergents. Outside, landscapers for the community have replaced 90 percent of the land with drought-resistant flowers and shrubs and restricted the use of pesticides and fertilizers.
Not only are these efforts money-saving, but, as President and CEO of Peconic Landing, Robert J. Syron says, they "want to ensure that [they] are being good neighbors by embracing environmental stewardship opportunities." The greater hope is that these conscious efforts to conserve our Earth's resources can stretch to the greater community of Long Island.
"While being environmentally sound, these are also economically smart decisions for the community," Mr. Syron said. "Our members are passionate about preserving our local environment because many of them are local to the North Fork."
The Greenport-based 144-acre campus consists of 109 cottages and 187 apartments for residential living, as well as 26-one bedroom assisted-living apartments and a health center with accommodations for 43 members in skilled nursing, 17 individuals in short-term rehabilitation, and 16 members in memory support. "We understand that a community like Peconic Landing is unique to the East End," said Robert J. Syron, President and CEO of Peconic Landing. "While this LEED certification is a good example of that commitment, our sustainability efforts are ongoing. We have an active and engaged group of members who continue to advocate for 'living green.'"
