If you wanted to attend this year's Greenport Shellabration and have not reserved a spot yet, unfortunately it might be too late.
"The past two years we have sold out, and this year will be the first that we sell out in advance," shared Kimberly Barbour, Marine Program Outreach Manager, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County. "As of right now (Thursday, November 30) we only have 21 of the 1,000 wristbands we make available left."
The two day restaurant walk, taking place Saturday, December 2 and Sunday, December 3, highlights the best in the area's shellfish, wine, and beer, allowing attendees to nosh on innovative bites from Greenport's leading chefs.
"We are so thrilled that for the first time in the six year history of this event, we have pre-sold nearly all 1,000 wristband packages we make available for Shellabration," Barbour said.
As you indulge in $5 small plates featuring local shellfish, which are paired with $3 local sips, you'll also be supporting stewards of the environment and the restoration of shellfish to the bays.
"The proceeds generated from this event support Cornell Cooperative Extension's Marine Program, specifically our SPAT Program which teaches people how to grow their own oysters and our Back to the Bays Initiative which also offers hands on stewardship opportunities for the public to be involved with our efforts to bring back marine habitat and shellfish populations," Barbour explained.
Participating eateries include Noah's
, Front Street Station, The Frisky Oyster, Andy's, Bruce & Son, Luncharitos, and many more. "Local oyster growers, baymen, farmers, craft beer and wine makers provide Greenport's finest chefs with local ingredients to create shellfish dish and beverage pairings that our participants enjoy on the restaurant walk," she said. "17 of Greenport's Restaurants will be participating and many of the local merchants will be offering special deals to Shellabration participants as well."
Those specials will only be available to those that purchased a Shellabration wristband in advance. "To get access to the Shellabration specials you must have a wristband, which we provide our guests in exchange for their $25 donation to CCE Marine Program," she noted. "Included upon check in is a pour of beer donated by Greenport Harbor Brewing Company
and a plate of shellfish shucked by our SPAT members featuring some of the very best local oysters donated by Oyster Ponds Oyster Company, Ketchem Seafarm, Cornell Oysters, and Noyak Oyster Company."
For those that missed out on the popular happening, there's always next year, but maybe plan ahead in 2018. "We've receive great support from the community which has enabled us to sell this event out for the past three years. We look forward to 'Shellabrating' with everyone who pre-purchased a wristband for this weekend's festivities," she added. "For those wanting to get in on the fun next year, I'd definitely recommend reserving your wristband well in advance!"
Shellabration will take place from 12 to 4 p.m. on both days.
