Recently, 82 dogs who were on the "critical list" at a huge facility in South Texas were given a second chance at life, some of which were brought to a North Fork-based shelter. Over the next couple of days, Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton will receive 25 of the rescues.

"We've taken a lot of dogs from them over the past couple of months," noted Pamela Green, Executive Director of Kent Animal Shelter. "They're in a high kill shelter down in South Texas. They're on the "critical list," which is a euthanasia list."

Two volunteers, Audi and Selina of SFCA, prepare the dogs to be transported from Texas to their new rescue shelter, and volunteer Tawana Couch is responsible for coordinating the animal's transportation via Southwest Airlines to their new shelter. Couch also reaches out to rescue facilities when an animal is in danger of being euthanasia, in many instances the reasoning is sadly just overcrowding.

Unfortunately, since the shelter where the animals are rescued from doesn't spay/neuter, unwanted animals remain an issue. "The shelter down there is very large and has a very high kill rate because they have so many dogs," she shared. "The problem is they're not big on spay/neuter down there and they really have a different way of taking care of their companion animals."

When they arrive at Kent, many of them suffer from medical issues, which result in costly procedures and medicine. "They come here and a lot of them have medical issues - like heartworm, parasites. We treat everything and of course spay and neuter them, microchip them and eventually they go out to homes," she noted. "Some of them don't have medical issues, but quite a number of them do. For instance, one came in pregnant with heartworm. We take care of the medical issues and get them on their way to a home, a permanent responsible home."

To offset some of the medical costs, Kent launched the Save a Life campaign. Donations to the rescue campaign will be used to provide the animals with food, shelter, vaccinations, medical care, treatment of life threatening diseases and costly surgeries, if needed.

While the animals may come from horrific circumstances, Green notes that they are ready to find a loving family. "They're very, very adoptable dogs. All sizes - a lot of young ones," she explained. "I think the oldest one we've taken here is four. Generally, there aren't any puppies, but they're young adults - 8 months, a year and up."

"We take as many as we can," added Green.

I volunteer at PVAC and we do get older dogs, they just don't make it to rescue or adoption. It would be nice to see these old guys adopted or fostered. Do wish the rescue groups would consider them. Thank you for rescuing our pups.
