Dixie, a dog rescued by Kent Animal Shelter
from the Thailand dog meat trade, finally has her happy ever after! Jessica Weeks and Bill Gillis participated in Kent Animal Shelter's Wines & Canines Walk/Run on Sunday, September 25th at Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard with Kent alumnus "Kimmo". There, the couple met Dixie and couldn't get her off their minds. The Calverton-based animal shelter is happy to report the couple welcomed Dixie into their loving home on October 2, 2016.
"Instead of being brutally butchered in the Asian dog meat trade, she is now safe and sound in a loving home," said Pamela Green, Executive Director of the Kent Animal Shelter. "I hope Dixie's story shows what's possible when we reach out a helping hand. Pets need and deserve better from us around the world. We wish Dixie, her fur-brother Kimmo, and her new family great happiness."
Kent provided Dixie, along with several other dogs, a warm place to live, healthy food, veterinary care, and lots of love.
Millions of dogs are slaughtered each year for food consumption. Especially over the past few years, animal activists have fought back at festivals like the Yulin dog meat festival. Animal shelters across the United States have tried their best to work collaboratively with animal activists in countries where consuming dog meat is popular, and transport the dogs to safe shelters before it's too late. Kent is just one of the many shelters that help save these innocent animals.
SOI Dog Foundation is a not-for- profit, legally registered charitable organization in Thailand, the United States, Australia, the UK, France, Canada and Holland that helps the homeless, neglected and abused dogs and cats of Asia, works to end the dog meat trade throughout the region, and responds to animal welfare disasters and emergencies. The SOI Dog Foundation was responsible for Dixie and several other dogs' rescue. They were brought to the United States on Saturday, August 27th.
