In 2014, PetSmart Charities awarded the Kent Animal Shelter
, a private, not-for-profit humane society, with a $56,560 grant in support of the sterilization of 1,500 cats, both feral and house, that reside in the Riverhead area over the following two years. Pamela Green, Kent Animal Shelter Executive Director, is proud to announce that the Calverton-based shelter has accomplished their goal.
"The Kent Animal Shelter has made a significant contribution to the Riverhead community by helping to insure the health and well-being of both the human and animal populations through a 2-year program culminating in the sterilization of 1,500 owned and free roaming cats," said Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter
With the grant, Kent Animal Shelter's mission was to address the area's overpopulation of stray and homeless cats. It also included funding for rabies vaccinations and additional surgical instruments, to ensure that the free roaming animals were kept healthy and didn't put pets it came into contact with at risk of catching a disease.
This isn't the first time PetSmart Charities has backed the Kent Animal Shelter. Since 2011, the non-profit organization has assisted Kent Animal Shelter in the spaying and neutering of thousands of animals via numerous grants. With each Kent campaign, the Calverton-based shelter looks to lower the number of homeless, abused and abandoned animals, and prevent the birth of thousands of additional animals on the East End.
But the funding is not just aimed at feral animals. They have also tremendously helped pet owners that cannot provide essential medical services to their animals. PetSmart Charities grants have allowed Kent to offer service to owners at the reduced rate of just a $20 surgical co-pay, a deal that owners have been incredibly thankful for.
"We are all working toward common goals, reducing the numbers of unwanted cats and dogs that end up in crisis situations every year and helping the residents, many of whom are pet owners in our community, by providing essential services for their pets affordably," said Green.
Throughout 2016 Kent Animal Shelter will complete four additional PetSmart Charities spay/neuter campaigns. At the beginning of the year, Kent concentrated on neutering 250 male dogs and male cats, which was followed by spaying 220 owned cats in February. June will focus on spaying and neutering 215 owned dogs and cats that are six-months-old or younger. The final campaign of the year, which Kent believes is one of their most important campaigns, will take place in August. It's goal is to spay or neuter 125 Pit Bull and Pit Bull mixes.
