Annual North Fork Shellabration Adds Kick-Off Festivity

Nicole Barylski

Shellabration, a weekend long restaurant walk throughout Greenport Village in support of Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Suffolk County's Marine Program, will offer a spectacular North Fork gastronomic experience on Saturday, December 1 and Sunday, December 2.

"Our 7th Annual Greenport Shellabration will once again bring 1,000 'Shellabrants' to the beautiful bayside Village of Greenport for a weekend of culinary enjoyment," Kimberly Barbour, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County Marine Program Outreach Manager, explained. "We're thankful to have the support of the Greenport BID and the many restaurants and shops who graciously host our participants and enable this event to be such a success."

From 12 to 4 p.m., on both days, featured restaurants will highlight local shellfish, and the dish will be served with a specially curated wine or beer that compliments the fare. The small plate offerings will be available for $5, while the local wine and craft beer tastings are $3.

This year, attendees can enjoy pairings from First and South with McCall Wines, The Frisky Oyster with Sparkling Pointe, noah's with Bedell, Little Creek Oysters with Greenport Harbor Brewing Co., Lucharitos with Fire Island Beer Co., Stirling Sake, Kate's Cheese Co. with Anthony Nappa Wines, Andy's with Bedell, Basso with Pellegrini Vineyards, Salamanders on Front with Lenz, Industry Standard Bar with Kontokosta, Greenhill Kitchen with Macari Wines, American Beech with Lieb Cellers, and Front Street Station.

The 2018 Shellabration will also feature a special opening celebration. "New for this year we're partnering with Green Hill Kitchen who will be hosting our first ever Shellabration Kick Off Party!" Barbour shared. "Working with Peeko Oysters and Verve Wines, Chef Wolfgang Ban will be preparing an amazing 5 course wine dinner that will also feature local ingredients from K.K.'s the Farm and Treiber Farms."

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County expects a large turnout at the new festivity. "Space is limited, call Greenhill Kitchen to reserve! After dinner everyone is welcomed upstairs for dancing and drinks," Barbour noted. "The after party if free and open to all so we invite everyone to come help us kick off Shellabration weekend."

Additionally, Castello di Borghese Vineyard will be serving up its "Rosé for the Bays," which is the complimentary wine tasting at check in.

There will also be special promotions for Shellabration participants at local shops.

To participate, Shellabrants must reserve wristbands in advance. Wristbands are $30 for General Admission and $20 for Sunday Only.

"Funds raised will directly support our SPAT Program and enable us to continue to teach community members how to grow shellfish in support of our bays," Barbour added. "Proceeds will also support efforts to expand the spat-on-shell oyster reef, increase clam seeding efforts, and continue our eelgrass restoration planting at our 'Back to the Bays Stewardship Site' in the waters off of Greenport Village."

The goal of the Back to the Bays Initiative is to "increase stakeholder engagement in Water Quality Protection Initiatives; Habitat Improvement Projects; Shellfish and Fin Fish Research and Restoration; and Youth and Community Education Experiences." CCE founded the SPAT Program to champion community engagement and encourage East Enders to become more involved with their environment and the restoration of shellfish to the bays. Volunteers and members are given shellfish seed, as well as tools and supplies so they can set up their very own shellfish gardens. If they happen to live near waterfront, they can establish the garden there, if not they can do so in the SPAT community garden where the miniscule shellfish flourish in containment, with no threats from predators. Once they grow to an adult size, the shellfish are released into local creeks and bays, promoting wild settlement.

"We're on track for another sold out event, it is unlikely that wristbands will be available for day of sales so we highly recommend reserving in advance to guarantee access to Shellabration," Barbour relayed. "$30 entry fee includes your first pairing of the day, a complimentary pour of Borghese's Rose for the Bays or a Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. beer, alongside a sampling of shellfish from our raw bar stocked with local clams and oysters generously provided by Ketchams Seafarm, Cornell Oysters, Noyac Oysters and Harbor Light Oyster Company."
