Come out to support and celebrate Long Island's long-standing tradition of potato growers, farms and products during the Annual Long Island Potato Festival at Peconic Bay Winery on Sunday, August 10, 2014, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Over 30 exhibitors, six food trucks, live music, free activities for all ages, educational programs and contests will make this day one you definitely don't want to miss. Craft beverages, fresh food, and artisan products will be available for sampling and purchase.

Think you've got the best family potato salad recipe? Prove it by entering their best potato salad contest. Also during the festival, you can participate in the great potato-peeling race, mashed potato sculpting contest and a mashed potato-eating contest. Talk about a spudtacular time. It is free to enter all contests and all contestants will receive free admission to the Long Island Potato Festival.

Free activities during the day include potato sack races, beanbag tossing, potato balance races, hot potato, Mr. Potato head decorating and much more. Live music by Summer Breeze will be playing throughout the day.

Other free programming includes "Cooking with Potatoes" presented by the two time Chopped Champion Chef Marc Anthony Bynum and "How Potato Chips Are Made" with Long Island's own North Fork Potato Chips.

Potato-based treats from exhibitors will include loaded potato wontons with turkey, bacon, cheddar and chives, and sweet potato pie wontons by All American Wontons. The Eat Me Drink Me food truck will have offering poutine, truffle Fries and Pickle Fries. Island Empanada will serve up their famous Chorizo and Potato empanada with sweet red bell peppers, cilantro, onions and garlic. Hop Fries will have hop infused French fries and twisted fried potatoes by Chip Stix.

This year, the Long Island Potato Festival has chosen the Alzheimer's Association as the charity partner for this event. Raffle tickets will be sold throughout the afternoon to raise funds for the Annual Walk to End Alzheimer's.

Admission is $20 per person, which includes access to all of the free programs, contests, samples and activities. Admission for children 12 and under is free.

I bet you didn't know that New York's potato growers rank 13th in the nation, or that potatoes are 100 percent fat and sodium free and loaded with antioxidants. I guess that makes French fries good for you, right?

Peconic Bay Winery is located at 31320 Main Road in Cutchogue. For more information on the Long Island Potato Festival, visit www.lipotatofest.com.
