This summer, Alex Ferrone Gallery in Cutchogue will explore how light is used in creating images.
"Photography's very essence is light," explained Alex Ferrone, Director of Alex Ferrone Gallery. "Photographers have long sought the perfect light for their images - capturing the play of dust-speckled beams, exploring the graphics of shadows, interpreting moods of the Golden Hour, and translating colors of artificial light. Is light falling on or illuminating the subject? Is light the subject? Is it creating mysterious shadows? Does it separate the subject drastically from the background? What mood has it created?"
If you think you have mastered the essence of ideal lighting, the Cutchogue-based gallery is currently holding an open call for photographically based works to be featured in Elemental Light: National Juried Exhibition
, with a submission deadline
of Wednesday, May 15th.
Lisa Chalif, Curator of the Heckscher Museum of Art, is acting as the guest juror of the July exhibition. Chalif is well experienced in the world of art galleries and exhibitions. In the number of exhibits she has curated personally, Chalif focuses on a diverse range of subjects while remaining faithful to the museum's bones.
This exhibition, which shows impressions of the Alex Ferrone Gallery, is intended to show how light affects the perfect photo. How is the light influencing the subject in the photo? What is the subject in the photo? Is it the light itself? Anyone who has ever merely held a camera can understand how the lighting in a scene can drastically alter the impressions that the image has over the viewer. Adept photographers can harness that variable to augment what they want to portray in the image.
"Images containing creative uses of light - soft, diffused, harsh, cold, hot, backlit, and more is what we will be exhibiting by national photographic artists in Elemental Light,
" added Ferrone.
The competition is open to national photographers and photographic artists. The submission fee is $40 and all pieces must be submitted by May 15, 2017.
Alex Ferrone Gallery is located at 25425 Main Road in Cutchogue. Contest guidelines and more information can be found at www.callforentry.org.
