East End Arts
, in partnership with the Town of Riverhead, has announced the selected artists for their fire hydrant redesign project in Downtown Riverhead, "All Fired Up on Main," which will debut on October 12, 2014 during the Riverhead County Fair.
Nearly 20 designs were entered to mask the existing 10 fire hydrants located on Main Street and Peconic Avenue between Maple Street and Griffing Avenue. After being reviewed by a committee, the 10 selected artists include Bob Castaldi
, owner of the Suffolk Theater
in Riverhead, Tana Lee Alves of Water Mill, Michele Czwartacki of Mt. Sinai, Peter Levine of Patchogue, Drew Lockwood of Greenlawn, Emily Lockwood of Greenlawn, Arlene McLoughlin of Massapequa, Caitlyn Shea of Melville, Joanne Touch of Setauket and Barbara Wooten of Riverhead.
"Congratulations to the artists and I look forward to seeing our fire hydrants come to life," Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter
said. "These installations make our downtown more inviting and walkable for residents and visitors alike."
Selected designs include abstract color-scapes, flora and fauna designs, patriotic patterns and everything in between. "I had so much fun painting [Sunday] morning... the town's people were so friendly and positive, stopping and beeping... thank you again," noted artist Arlene McLoughlin.
All artwork will be completed by Friday, October 10th, and an awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, October 12th, at the Riverhead County Fair. Additionally, a "Meet the Artists" Reception will be held at the Riverhead Edgar Allen Poe
Festival on Friday, October 31st.
This restoration project was made possible through the generosity of H2H Architects and Engineers and Home Depot
