"
Coppelia is a springtime treat," shared
Sara Jo Strickland, Hampton Ballet Theatre School Owner. "One of the great comic ballets of the 19th century, it involves the courtship between feisty Swanilda, Franz and the doll Coppelia." During the production, HBTS stars will be joined by guest artists Nicholas Sipes, who will play the role of Franz, and Adam and
Gail Baranello of
A&G Dance Company, who will take on the divertissement, "War."
Rose Kelly, an Advanced Professional Student Level 6 at HBTS, will be featured as Swanhilda.
The story follows the courtship of Swanhilda and Franz, which turns into a love triangle when Franz sees Coppelia, a life-sized dancing doll that was created by Dr. Coppélius. When Franz chooses Coppelia over Swanhilda, she sets out to set Franz straight and hilarity ensues. "The story involves love, trickery and lots of fun dancing," added Strickland. "HBTS was ready to take on this new ballet to showcase the ever growing talents of the dancers." Set to a score by Leo Delibes, Strickland choreographed the ballet, which includes ornate costumes created and hand-sewn by
Yuka Silvera, as well as lighting designed by
Sebastian Paczynski.
Strickland is pleased with the progress of her talented students. "They have met this challenge with such grace and confidence and this you will witness it as they take the stage the weekend of April 8 - 10," she noted.
Performances will take place on Friday, April 8th at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 9th at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 10th at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance for children (under 12-years-old) and $25 for adults for general orchestra seating, in advance. On the day of, tickets are $25 for children and $30 for adults for regular orchestra seating.
