The Parrish Art Museum
's Family Month, a commemoration of the local community, families, and young artists, will wrap up with a free Community Day on Sunday, March 10.
"Community Day is an opportunity for members of the public—adults, children, and families—to experience all that the Parrish Art Museum has to offer year round: engaging art exhibitions; creative and fun art workshops for children and adults. What is most important is the opportunity for all to engage with art, artists, and one another," said Parrish Director Terrie Sultan
The final Family Month event will include something for everyone - between art workshops guided by artists and Museum educators, "zip-tours" of the current exhibitions, art scavenger hunts, drumming circle, children's book reading, complementary refreshments, and free admission to the Museum for all.
Musician Jerome Liggon will present a special interactive drumming workshop at 12:30 p.m., followed by a reading of illustrator Ellen Weinstein's enchanting children's book Yayoi Kusama: From Here to Infinity
in the lobby at 1:30 p.m. Workshops will offer the chance to make ink prints with Museum educator Madolin Archer, paper sculpture with Parrish collection artist Virva Hennemo, and collages inspired by the work of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama with Weinstein.
From 12 to 3 p.m., attendees can take advantage of mini "zip-tours" led by Parrish Art Museum docents that will explore the two exhibitions on view: the 2019 Student Art Exhibition and the Permanent Collection exhibition, Every Picture Tells a Story.
This year's Student Exhibition highlights pieces from over 1,000 rising stars
that attend 37 Eastern Long Island schools. Students from Pre-K to High School are featured. There is also a collection of special works created during Shinnecock Indian Nation member Jeremy Dennis' Parrish residency, who worked with 350 students on creating pieces inspired by his approach to storytelling.
Every Picture Tells a Story,
an eight-gallery installation, boasts more than 100 works, including 40 exciting new acquisitions that include artist portraits by the iconic photographer Fred W. McDarrah, and paintings by David Salle and Photorealist artists.
"We invite the entire community to join us and we especially look forward to welcoming anyone who has not yet visited the Parrish. The Museum is here for everyone," Sultan added.
The Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Community Day activities are scheduled between 12 and 3 p.m.
