in Bridgehampton is taking a stand against the controversial travel ban that restricts admission of citizens from six Muslim-majority countries to the United States.
On Wednesday, April 19, Executive Chef Jason Weiner
's latest wine dinner at Almond will feature a five-course meal that highlights dishes from Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen - the six Middle East countries that have been impacted by the ban.
Weiner wants to show that food can be an easy, inclusive way to bring together people from different cultures and toast to dishes that we might not experience often. "Celebrating diverse cultural heritages is basically what chefs do every day," explained Weiner.
The evening will represent the six countries, course by course, and feature dishes like falafel/fattoush (a dish prominently featured in Syria and Iran), salaat jazar (a Sudanese spicy carrot salad), mafaiya (a Yemeni fish stew), lamb kebab (a popular dish in Libya), and kac kac (a Somalian beignet). Each dish will be paired with a complimentary pink wine from Channing Daughters
"I could talk about why these countries and why now but I'll assume that's self-evident to your readers," added Weiner. "But it happens that this food is a match made in heaven with the rosés crafted by Christopher Tracy
, the wine making genius at Channing Daughters."
Admission to Almond Presents: Five Courses of Dishes from Countries on Trump's Travel Ban is $85, plus tax and gratuity and $80 for members of Slow Food East End and Channing Daughters Winery
