Over Labor Day weekend, the Amagansett Food Institute (AFI), a nonprofit organization that supports East End-based farmers and food producers, will be hosting a series of workshops, demonstrations, and tastings at the Amagansett Farmers Market that revolve around hot peppers and other fiercely flavored products.

"During the fall, hot peppers are in abundance on the East End - from Open Minded Organics in Bridgehampton, to Quail Hill Farm in Amagansett, and even on the North Fork farms like Invincible Summer in Southold, local farmers have pepper varieties from all over the world," explained Kathleen Masters. "As part of our mission, AFI aims to give the local community an opportunity to taste these fresh and local peppers while also learning how to use them."

The "Heat Week" events will kick-off on Friday, September 2nd from 12 to 4 p.m. with Backyard Brine, who will offer different variations of spicy and sour pickles at its pop-up Pickle Bar. Additionally, Splash Mixers will be on-site with their vintage "Splash Bar Car" which will bring the heat with spicy 'mocktails' alongside the Amagansett Wine Stand.

Open Minded Organics will be at the Amagansett Farmers Market on Saturday and Monday with their fire-roasted chili pepper boats from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday will also feature a mix of acoustic blues, folk, and classic rock from Job Potter and Steven Tekulsky on the front lawn from 5 to 7 p.m.

Nadia Ernestus, fermentation expert and owner of Hamptons Brine, will present "Fermentation with a Kick: Canning Spicy Kraut" - a workshop that will cover how to make spicy sauerkraut and the varied health benefits of adding fermented foods into your diet. "Fermentation with a Kick: Canning Spicy Kraut" will take place on Sunday, September 4th from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission is $45 and the entry fee includes materials and supplies (attendees will make their own spicy kraut as part of the class). To register, visit amagansettfood.com.

When your taste buds are officially on fire and need a break, visit the Amagansett Wine Stand and Joe & Liza's Ice Cream, who will be open during the Market's standard hours.

For more non-spicy options, visitors can learn about DIY floral selections. Petal by Pedal, a New York City-based business, will be popping up at the Market Friday through Sunday. You can browse through a selection of pre-made beautiful flower bouquets that highlight East End buds, and Kate Gilman, founder and CEO of Petal by Pedal, will teach attendees about the art of proper placement during her daily flower arrangement class that will be held at 12 p.m. daily.

Amagansett Farmers Market is located at 367 Main Street in Amagansett. For more information about AFI, visit amagansettfoodinstitute.org.
