East End Arts
Gallery's latest exhibit at the Riverhead Town Hall Gallery features the artwork of Larry Costello, a Long Island native and quadriplegic who has had his work exhibited at Hofstra University, the Art League of Long Island, and the Port Jefferson Village Center. The exhibit can be viewed during Town Hall open office hours, which are Mondays through Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"It is an honor for East End Arts to be able to present the art of Larry Costello," says Jane Kirkwood, the Gallery Director. "Larry has overcome so much for so long and the fact that he has been able to create the art now on display at Riverhead Town Hall with just the slightest viability of his non-dominant hand is, in the words
of his wonderful social worker and champion Carl Calo, 'a miracle,'" shared Kirkwood.
Costello is a graduate of Dowling College with a degree in special education. He taught art and communication skills to handicapped children in upstate New York until a car accident in 1979. Days before turning 25, Costello fell asleep at the wheel and his car went off an embankment into Lake Oswego. He nearly drowned and sustained a traumatic brain injury, memory deficits, speech impairments, and loss of major motor function in all four limbs.
Just three years ago, Costello began living independently in his own apartment after having spent the last three decades in hospitals and nursing homes. He uses his partially paralyzed, non-dominant right hand to create computer graphics. With this technology, the images he conjures up in his mind are put to paper.
"Seeing the satisfaction and joy in Larry's eyes as his framed artwork was displayed in the Riverhead Town Hall corridor was a reward in itself," Kirkwood added.
Costello's work will remain on display until February 2018. Admission to the exhibit is free.
The gallery's mission is to build and enrich the community through education, support, and advocacy of the arts.
