"The time has come for our community to have a frank conversation about resetting our relationship to the coastline," noted Jeremy Samuelson, President, Concerned Citizens of Montauk
(CCOM). "Over time, we need to pull back vulnerable infrastructure. It will take time, planning, money, and agreement within the community to get this right."
On Saturday, October 1st, the East End community is invited to join the candid discussion during "The Future of Downtown Montauk" - CCOM's Annual Topical Forum. The public meeting will cover the future of Montauk's coastline, including the Army Corps of Engineers' shoreline project, FIMP, which calls for 120,000 additional cubic yards of sand to the beach every four years, in front of the line of buried sandbags that the Corps recently installed. The gathering will also address local water quality issues.
The audience will hear from local officials, environmentalists and local business about the featured topics. "The Future of Downtown Montauk" panel will include Larry Cantwell, East Hampton Town Supervisor; Jennifer Garvey
, SUNY Stony Brook, Associate Director, Center for Clean Water Technology; Andy Brosnan, Chair, Eastern Long Island Chapter Surfrider
Foundation; Paul Monte
, President, Montauk Chamber of Commerce
; David Rattray, Editor, East Hampton Star
; and Jeremy Samuelson, President, CCOM. Attendees can voice their concerns and opinions during a Q & A with the panelists.
"CCOM's forum on Saturday is a chance for Montauk to continue this conversation," added Samuelson.
"The Future of Downtown Montauk" will take place at the Montauk School Gym from 2 to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
CCOM's mission is to "preserve and protect the unique environment and ecology of Montauk through education, advocacy, and grassroots citizen action."
