, the Sag Harbor-based free cancer counseling center, has released preview copies of Coping with Cancer on the East End. The 99 page guide is a "where-to-find-it" informational of cancer care resources, geared for use by newly diagnosed patients on the East End of Long Island.
The guide ranges from chapters which focus solely on resources located on the East End like a list of all local pharmacies, all local oncologists, and places to find transportation assistance. Other chapters in the guide are less grass-roots and focused on other useful information including how to obtain a "second opinion," Medicare coverage, the most useful favorite Internet websites and how to locate a clinical trial. The guide also includes"practical tips" about navigating the East End health care system collected from patients, staff and Directors over the years.
When discussing the origins
of the guide, founder of Fighting Chance, Duncan Darrow
, said, "At the first meeting of our Board in 2002, we asked ourselves: what could we provide in the community that would be of practical use to cancer patients? Someone said: 'Just go through the local Yellow Pages and pull out every listing related to cancer resources, organize them by topic and print it up.' That's exactly what we did."
