Congressman Tim Bishop
and Cross Sound Ferry
executives have announced that the ferry service has been awarded a $1.2 million grant through the Federal Transit Administration's Passenger Ferry Grant Program. The grant will be used to repair 270 feet of bulkhead, replace dockside
ramps and allow for new berthing dolphins to be installed.
According to officials, this project will ensure uninterrupted services to more than 1.1 million passengers annually.
"The terminal at Cross Sound Ferry is an important link for those from eastern Long Island who are traveling to New England," said Congressman Bishop. "We need to ensure that this mode of transportation remains available and that the conditions at the facility are in the best condition possible to protect the safety of those who utilize its services.
County Executive Steve Bellone
agreed with Bishop. "Suffolk County is a proud partner in the this rehabilitation project which will help preserve and enhance the existing ferry terminal allowing continued operations providing passenger and vehicle services to the residents of Long Island and New England during normal operations and vital supplies and services during times of regional emergencies."
The Cross Sound Ferry has been in operation for approximately 40 years, providing services to Orient Point, New York, New London and Connecticut.
