Virtual Winter Lecture Series - Life in a Small Town: Rev. Lyman Beecher’s Reflections on East Hampton from 1798-1810

Revered Lyman Beecher (1775-1863) read about Rev. Samuel Buell's death before he was even ordained. East Hampton's vacant pulpit intrigued him. Buell was a famous and dynamic preacher who held his job for 52 years and Lyman Beecher was 23 years and old looking for his first job. Though the $300 salary proved to be not sufficient for his growing family, he enjoyed East Hampton. One of his sermons contains a general history of the place and his autobiography and correspondence are rife with many reminiscences of the pleasures that East Hampton afforded him.
