Twinkle, Twinkle Exploding Star, How We Wonder What You Are!

Friday, February 7, 2020

6:00 pm to 7:30 pm

Betelgeuse, the red "shoulder" star in Orion, recently dimmed, fueling speculation it may soon become a supernova, a spectacular explosion signaling a violent stellar death. Supernovae do not just signal star death, they also trigger the formation of new stars and can be the birthplace of pulsars and black holes. Stony Brook Univ Prof Alan Calder will discuss supernovae and present recent research results. If time and weather permit, astronomers will set up a telescope.
