Westhampton Beach - Floats, boats, bagpipers, drummers, dancers, dogs, and more - the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in Westhampton Beach had everyone walkin' the green line on Saturday, March 10, 2012.
Michael Pitcher was chosen as this year's Grand Marshal. Pitcher is a former editor of the
Hampton Chronicle and
Southampton Press, as well as a board member of the
Quogue Wildlife Refuge. Pitcher was the 46th Grand Marshal to lead the parade since it's inception in 1968.
In particular, the selection committee chose Pitcher for his tireless community service work on behalf of the
East End Hospice, which plans to break ground on a new facility in Quiogue in 2012. These efforts inspired Pitcher to chose "A Home For Everyone" as this year's parade theme.
The popular parade and beautiful weather drew attendees from far and wide decked out in their finest green to enjoy an afternoon filled with fire engines, police cars, classic and antique cars, military and emergency personnel, fire and police personnel, Boys Scouts, Girl Scouts, members of historic societies dressed in period costumes, horses, heavy equipment vehicles, animal rescue organizations, horses, riders, tractors, local school children, marching bands, politicians and pals, and, indeed, everyone certainly did feel at home.

The WHB St. Pat's parade was always the signal to shake off winter and anticipate the ELI spring and summer. And for those of us who preferred a higher level of involvement, there was the journey of building a float. Recalls the days of Magic's, Artful Dodger, Back Stage Cafe (the one I used to run), Bridle Path, The Potato, Marakesh, Sunset Grill, and Scarletts. Yes, i know these are all watering holes, but that was the era. Those were good times.
