Following its tremendously successful, sold-out inaugural Sag Harbor Cinema (SHC) Drive-In Movie Night featuring Grease earlier this summer, SHC will be hosting a summer Drive-In Movie Series at Havens Beach in Sag Harbor.
“The light, the colors, the air, the heat, the smells, the sounds, the water, the adventure, the romance, the daydreams, the late nights, the everlasting memories, even the scorching asphalt…there is nothing like ‘the feeling of summer.’ And cinema has captured it so well in so many different ways. To celebrate that feeling seemed like a natural subject for this series. Especially this particular year, and through a program of outdoor screenings,” noted Sag Harbor Cinema artistic director Giulia D’Agnolo Vallan.
Kathryn Bigelow’s Point Break (1991) is first up on Sunday, July 5. Then catch Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom (2012) on Sunday, July 12, followed by Gregory Nava’s Selena (1997) on Sunday, July 19.
Point Break follows rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves), who is assigned to investigate the “Ex-Presidents” – a group of bank robbers that wear Reagan, Nixon, LBJ, and Carter masks during their heists. Utah successfully infiltrates a group of surfers that he thinks is responsible for the robberies, but finds himself in a tough spot after befriending their charismatic leader, Bodhi (Patrick Swayze).
Set in 1965, in New Penzance, an island off the coast of New England, Moonrise Kingdom tells the story of two enamored pre-teens, Sam Shakusky (Jared Gilman) and Suzy Bishop (Kara Hayward), that decide to run away and hide out on a remote beach. However, an intense storm rolls in, forcing the quirky town members (Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray) to join forces to find the runaways.
Selena, the hit biographical drama about beloved Tejano pop star Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, was Jennifer Lopez’s breakout film role. She stars as Quintanilla-Pérez, a young singer who rockets to stardom, but before she can reach her full potential, tragedy strikes.
Tickets are $40 per vehicle. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Havens Beach will open at 9 p.m., while screenings will commence around 9:30 p.m.
Havens Beach is located at Havens Beach Road in Sag Harbor. For more information, visit www.sagharborcinema.org.
