The Parrish Art Museum
in Water Mill will present a showing of the film Meow Wolf: Origin Story
, chronicling the astounding 10-year journey of an anarchic art collective that developed its work into a multi-million dollar business, on Friday, December 21, at 6 p.m.
The film, which is directed by Morgan Capps and Jilann Spitzmiller, reveals the artists' process that inspired new ways of participating in culture and entertainment for themselves as well as for audiences who engage with their work.
"In a time where audiences are searching for deeper, more immersive ways to engage with art, the story and work of Meow Wolf is extremely compelling and timely," said Parrish Art Museum Education Associate Jillian Bock. "The collective's magical creations are a feast for the senses and add a fresh new vision and perspective to experiential installations."
The film depicts a dozen young Santa Fe artists disenfranchised from the city's active gallery scene. The group lived and worked together in various housing situations, eventually renting a warehouse space and painting every inch of its surfaces and building sculptures that emerged from the paintings. The film follows those early beginnings from the group's expansion, to their initial forays into the gallery world, and to the turning point when they approached Game of Thrones
creator George R.R. Martin for financial support. Martin purchased a 33,000 square foot bowling alley, which Meow Wolf transformed into a unique and immersive art installation, House of Eternal Return.
The film is included in the price of museum admission.
