Parrish Kicking Off The Weekend With Special Friday Family Programs

Anastasia Lennon

For the last two Fridays of December, the Parrish Art Museum will present its "Friday Evening Family Programs" with a screening of Oscar-nominated film Into the Woods on December 22, and a windmill building project with LEGOs on December 29. The former will complement the museum's exhibition, Into the Wood[s], which is now part of the permanent collections.

The film, which is rated PG, begins at 6 p.m. and has a running time of 125 minutes. For those not familiar, Into the Woods is a film adaptation of the Tony-award winning musical that stars Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, James Corden, Christine Baranski, Tracey Ullman, Lilla Crawford, Johnny Depp, Daniel Huttlestone, MacKenzie Mauzy, and Billy Magnussen. Included and intertwined are the classic stories of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel. This "funny and heartfelt" musical contrasts with the museum exhibition, which showcases wood as a material for and content of paintings.

The LEGO workshop will begin at 5:30 p.m. and run until 7:30 p.m. It is a family-friendly event in which participants must work together to recreate offshore windmills. Steven Schwartz, architect and founder of Building Blocks Workshops, will be bringing a whopping 70,000 LEGO building blocks to this creative event.

"We're delighted to offer these engaging and entertaining programs where families can come together around the holidays to collaborate on creating a meaningful project, or enjoy a touching, poignant film," said Jillian Bock, Museum Education Associate.

As space will be limited in both events, advance registration is required and can be done online.

The Parrish Art Museum's mission is to "foster connections among individuals, art, and artists through care and interpretation of the collection, the presentation of exhibitions, publications, educational initiatives, programs, and artists-in-residence."

Tickets for both events are $12 for non-members and free for members, children, and students.

Parrish Art Museum is located at 279 Montauk Highway in Water Mill. One can register online or by calling 631-283-2118 x130. For more information, please visit parrishart.org.
